Injury and Crash Analysis has conducted approximately 90 side underride crashes. These crash events have provided information and insight in developing a clear understanding of the interaction between the passenger vehicle and semi-truck trailers. Of the approximately 90 crashes, 8 of these crashes have been into a trailer which has been outfitted with a Side Underride Guard (SURG). The Side Underride Guard prevents a passenger vehicle from underriding the semi-truck trailer and damage to the occupant compartment from occurring. The collected data has allowed us to develop a formula for calculating impact speed of passenger cars and trucks.
